[MassHistPres] 'Up lighting'

Most historic buildings were designed before artificial lighting. So shade and shadow were exclusively from the sun. Historic structures are best presented with a soft glow from the inside providing a sense of life inside at night. On the other hand trees lit from below at night are wonderful. If a little bit of light hits the historic structure, that doesn’t generally detract from the character of the structure as long as this secondary light does not overwhelm the glow from inside the building.

We expect the shadows on a faces and facade to be in expected places, and uplighting reverses that. It’s dramatic, but may not show either "in the best light" — so to speak.

The lighting effects are quite nice by highlighting architectural features of the facade. Does your community participate in that or have incentives? Thank you for any information you may have.
