[MassHistPres] small town graphics

Julie,
Your advice about economics being a driver is a good one. One issue we have in common is upgrading State route 135 which goes through the center of both of our towns. As part of the roadway upgrade the state wants us to put a bike lane in which unfortunately would usurp all the current street parking on one side. Not that a bike lane isn’t justified (I’ve ridden my Trek up and down the street hundreds of times) but taking away street parking or tearing down existing buildings for off-street parking are both poor decisions.

Hello,
This is what I've mentioned a few times. Tie it to the economics. I gave a verbal presentation at a town meeting. No images. Spoken from the heart.
We also had a lot of historical walking tours to help beef up local pride.
Visit some of the town towns with the highest property values in Mass and take some photos if images are desired, they tend to have lovely streetscapes with historic buildings intact or infill that makes ascetic sense.
Resurfacing over what makes a town unique creates a town in Florida, although even towns in Florida are preserving their historical facades, even if they are midcentury modern, like parts of Orlando.
Does Hopkinton want to be unique or generic?
Mass is an interesting state. It has so much history that it doesn't truly cherish it and see the ties to economics and the heritage industry.
Go to other places in the country and history is booming!
Thanks

He Mike et all.
You are describing our issues as well, apparently an increasing problem. I too would be interested in the answers.

Does anyone have graphics / photos / presentations on the character of a small town streetscape? In Hopkinton our downtown area is under pressure to morph the 18th/19th century vernacular buildings to a 21st century version incompatible with existing. There are already some missing teeth that were filled in by poorly designed commercial facilities.
I would love to make the case that preserving the character of the existing streetscape can actually be a business advantage rather than allowing indiscriminate replacement and lose any sense of identity.
