[MassHistPres] Subject: Disposing of unneeded old books at historical society

Hi David:

We here in Uxbridge are about to embark on a project to organize and evaluate some 50 years of printed and manuscript materials held by our Historical Society in anticipation of requesting the services of the State's Roving Archivist.

As for your question: I have used several of the compilations you list below and find them unequalled for research. I do have to admit that I much prefer printed copies over digital versions. I have a visceral objection to tossing books of any kind into a dumpster and fervently hope you can find a home for them. Have you asked the Medfield Library if they would take the books? If not, they might be willing to advertise the books' availability through the CWMARS network to see if there are any takers.

Good luck,

Michael Potaski

Like all historical societies, Medfield’s has old, old books probably never looked at, taking up valuable space and that really don’t belong in its collection because they have nothing to do with our town’s history.

Would anyone be interested in these books? Please let me know.

I’m also interested in learning what you’ve done with such storage problems in your collection. Shall I just take them to the transfer station? I understand you can’t recycle hardcovers, I believe because of glue used in binding. It seems brutal, but what else is there to do?

Ken Gloss, Brattle Book Shop’s knowledgeable antiquarian book dealer, told one of our board members that these books have little or no market value, and these texts are available online anyway. I sought a second opinion from a good friend who has sold many books online through Amazon. She spot-checked online among the books below and concurred; she thought many of them listed may have had zero online sales.
