The Town of Bourne has a town owned building which was originally built in 1897 to house the Jonathan Bourne Public Library and served in that capacity until 1985. At that time the building became known as The Jonathan Bourne Historical Center. Still a town owned building the space is shared by The Bourne Archives and The Bourne Historical Commission, both town boards. It is also shared by The Bourne Historical Society and The Bourne Society for Historic Preservation. Expenses for operating the Center are shared by The Town of Bourne and The Bourne Historical Society. It is operated by a Board of Governors drawn from each of the four groups which use it. Part of the space is used by the Bourne Historical Society for museum space and has changing exhibits during the year.
The Jonathan Bourne Historical Center is a yellow brick building designed by Henry Vaughn and given to the town by Emily Howland Bourne as a memorial to her father, Jonathan Bourne, for whom the town was named.
