The Newton Historical Society is headquartered in the Jackson Homestead, which is owned by the city. The relationship is established by city ordinance, so there's no need for a lease or license.
The relationship goes deeper, as the city maintains a separate Jackson Homestead Department, and the Society (a 501(c)3) and city "do business as" Historic Newton. There are integrated governance documents including "Governing Principles of the Joint Board" which is comprised of city Trustees and Society Directors, as well as the "Bylaws of the Newton Historical Society," and "Rules and Regulations of the Jackson Homestead Trustees."

Subject: [MassHistPres] Use of town building for historic memorabilia
Is there any Historical Society that uses a town building for their collection of historic memorabilia? If so, what is your agreement with the town? Are you issued a lease or a license?
Thank you
