Dear Heather:
Are you familiar with the National Trust's Research & Policy Lab (formerly the Preservation Green Lab)? They have undertaken studies that may be relevant to your intern's project. Below are links to some that may be relevant or at the very least helpful, and there could well be others:

Subject: [MassHistPres] Sustainability Guidelines for Historic Homes
This summer, the Town of Concord is hosting a summer intern through the UNH Sustainability Institute focusing on sustainability guidelines for historic homes. Her goal is to identify barriers, document best practices, and create resources for sustainability in older, historic homes and within the historic districts in Concord. She’ll be joining us for 10 weeks starting the beginning of June.
I’m looking for other communities that have done similar research, have resources for historic homes/districts, or have experts on staff. If you are willing to be interviewed as part of her research or have recommendations for others that could provide insight, please let me know. Thanks!
Heather Gill, Senior Planner
