[MassHistPres] Historic District - contiguous properties?

Hi George,
You are correct, local historic districts do not need to be contiguous. Lincoln and Woburn both have non-contiguous districts, while Brookline has recently proposed one as a thematic district covering properties associated with H. H. Richardson and the Olmsted family.

The Town of Harvard may seek to include an historic property in one of the historic districts that is not contiguous with the current properties in the district. There is a large lot that contains a school between the current district boundary and this house. It certainly makes sense to have this house to be included with the others in the district for several reasons. I see nothing Chapter 40C or our town bylaw that specifies the properties must be contiguous and wondered if other towns have districts that contain non-contiguous properties. Any thoughts would be helpful and appreciated.

Somerville's HPC takes a similar position to Duxbury. Though solar panels currently still require full commission review and approval, Somerville does as well. Note that there is a statement in Chapter 40C about the need for commissions to be particularly mindful of alternative energy solutions. Our HPC typically negotiates alternative locations for related equipment boxes so that they are not located on the street-facing facade.

Our town, Duxbury, allows them on historic houses, some going back to the late 1600s,because they are not permanent fixtures on the building…and could always be removed.

My question is: how have other LHDCs dealt with applications for an array of solar panels on roofs of 18th and 19th century buildings (so many of which were built to optimize a south exposure). It sure is a major visible change for which there certainly is no historic precedent.
