Hello,
I wanted to let members of this listserv know of an opportunity at the
University of Massachusetts Amherst this coming spring semester. I am
teaching a cultural resource management course in the university's
department of architecture. The course is open through the University
Without Walls program to non-matriculated students and others not currently
enrolled at the university. The course meets Fridays from 1:25-3:45pm and
the university's fee schedule is as follows: $60/term reg. fee +
$580/credit.
The course description reads: This course will introduce students to the
theory, practice, and ongoing transformations of the field of cultural
resource management. We will focus closely on community-wide historic
preservation planning and preservation tools, including "reading" historic
sites and structures as evidence; identifying, evaluating, and protecting
historic resources such as buildings, neighborhoods, agricultural lands,
and archaeological sites; and engaging in ongoing debates about the
strengths and limitations of cultural resource management for affected
communities. Through this course, students will gain practical experience
in documenting historic sites and structures; acquire a thorough
understanding of how historic resources are saved, protected, and
re-purposed; and analyze the documentation techniques for historic,
environmental, and archaeological resources. Course topics will include the
history of historic preservation, federal and state laws, historic
districts, zoning, the National Register of Historic Places,
gentrification, the National Park Service, and climate change. Students
will practice and gain skills in recognizing the multi-faceted stakeholders
involved, and work to document and inventory local structures as part of
community preservation planning.
I would be happy to speak to anyone interested in enrolling and welcome any
preservation professionals interested in learning more about cultural
resource management!
Best,
--
