POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
PRESERVATION PLANNER/ARCHITECTURAL HISTORIAN (SURVEY)
Massachusetts Historical Commission
Boston, MA
The Massachusetts Historical Commission (MHC), office of the State Historic Preservation Officer, is seeking a Preservation Planner/Architectural Historian (Survey) to work within its Preservation Planning Division. Job responsibilities include; development and dissemination of MHC survey standards; technical assistance to local historical commissions, planning groups, avocational organizations, and consultants preparing inventory forms or undertaking historic property surveys; selection and management of historic property survey projects funded through MHC's Survey and Planning Grant program; development and management of MHC-initiated historic property survey projects; review and processing of inventory forms submitted to MHC; participation in staff evaluation of the eligibility of individual properties and districts for listing in the National Register of Historic Places; administration of new listings in and annual production of the State Register of Historic Places; participation in ongoing development of the Massachusetts Cultural Resources Information System (MACRIS); research, technical review, editing and/or preparation of inventory forms, National Register nominations, or other reports and publications; other projects or duties as directed.
Candidates should have a M.A. in Historic Preservation, Art History, Architectural History, History, or a related field, or a B.A. in the above fields plus 2 years working experience in historic preservation planning or a closely related field. Familiarity with current historic property inventory research and documentation standards and knowledge of Massachusetts history and architecture strongly preferred. Candidates should be well organized, possess excellent writing skills, and be able to communicate effectively with the public.
