Historical aerial photos can be useful in historical research. For some
great examples of what may lurk in state and local repositories, see my
website's tab for Ditches,
https://www.lylenyberg.com/copy-of-seacoast-by-air, and links there noted in
yellow. These relate to my research on the history of ditches in salt
marshes and to ecological studies of marshes. Some aerials go back as far as
1952, like the great MacConnell collection at UMass Amherst (subject of a
previous thread on this listserv). However, they are not "orthorectified"
and much work is required to accurately map them onto current maps. Still,
they are useful to see what buildings were (or were not) present in times
past.
