The Massachusetts Historical Commission (MHC) is seeking multiple qualified individuals to work within the Technical Services, Grants, and Preservation Planning Divisions.

The MHC was established in 1963 by the State Legislature to identify, evaluate, and protect the important historical and archaeological assets of the Commonwealth. Preservation programs at the MHC include the Inventory of Historic and Archaeological Assets of the Commonwealth, the National Register of Historic Places, Local Government Programs, Survey and Planning Grants, Massachusetts Preservation Projects Fund Grants, review of state and federally funded or licensed projects, federal and state historic rehabilitation tax credits, annual preservation awards, and Archaeology Month. The Massachusetts Historical Commission is also the office of the State Historic Preservation Officer and the State Archaeologist.

Preservation Planner/Architectural Historian (Survey and Planning)
Job responsibilities include:

*         Develop and disseminate MHC survey standards

*         Provide technical assistance to local historical commissions, planning groups, avocational organizations, and consultants preparing inventory forms or undertaking historic property surveys

*         Assist in the selection and management of historic property survey projects funded through MHC's Survey and Planning Grant program

*         Assist with the development and management of MHC-initiated historic property survey projects

*         Review and process individual properties and districts for listing in the National Register of Historic Places

*         Assist in the administration of new listings in and the annual production of the State Register of Historic Places

*         Participate in ongoing development of the Massachusetts Cultural Resources Information System (MACRIS)

*         Conduct research, technical review, editing and/or preparation of inventory forms, National Register nominations, and other reports and publications

Grants Division Project Manager
Job responsibilities include:

*         Initiate and prepare contract documents and administer/coordinate grant projects

*         Maintain and monitor grant contracts, bidding procedures and procurement, and project closeout including processing completion reports

*         Monitor construction activity for development projects and make periodic site visits

*         Review and process financial documentation

*         Prepare preservation restriction agreements associated with grant projects

*         Act as liaison between design professionals and grantees

*         Review eligibility of work to ensure that it meets the Secretary of the Interior's Standards

*         Review grant applications and make recommendations for the grant selection process

*         Participate as a presenter at grant workshops


Architectural Reviewer (Technical Services Division)
Job responsibilities include:

*         Conduct architectural reviews by reviewing project information on architectural projects in the Review and Compliance program. Review project notification forms, environmental notification forms, and letters of inquiry, comment on undertakings, and write correspondence. Meet with representatives of public agencies, project proponents and interested parties in the Review and Compliance consultation process, as needed

*         Conduct architectural reviews by reviewing project information on architectural projects in the Federal and State Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit programs. Review Federal and State Historic Rehabilitation applications and write comments on the applications

*         Process, track, file, and archive federal and state historic tax credit projects and other relevant data

*         Respond to inquiries from local historical commissions, agencies, project proponents, and the public

*         Participate in interdivisional meetings; assist in evaluation of National Register eligibility of historic properties

Candidates should meet the Secretary of the Interior's Standards and Guidelines for Archeology and Historic Preservation Professional Qualifications Standards<https://www.nps.gov/articles/sec-standards-prof-quals.htm>.

Candidates should have a M.A. in Historic Preservation, Art History, Architectural History, History, or a related field, or a B.A. in the above fields plus 2 years working experience in historic preservation or a closely related field.

Candidates should be well organized, possess excellent writing skills, and be able to communicate effectively with the public. Candidates will be expected to be proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
