Dear Ann Clifford:
Provincetown has the second largest local historic district in the Commonwealth in terms of total number of structures (Nantucket is the largest), overseen be a Historic District Commission (HDC) that meets twice a month and issues a little over 300 determinations and certificates each year. The Historic Commission meets once a month and is focused on the preservation of Town's collection of physical artifacts, collecting oral history, and public education.
The Building Commissioner and myself attend the HDC meetings to provide staff support and I informally attend some of the Historic Commission meetings, but they do not have a dedicated staff liaison. We do not have any dedicated preservation staff. The Cape Cod Commission has a preservation planner whom the HDC will contact two or three times a year for advisory opinions on unique applications.
Good luck,
Thaddeus J. Soulé

Subject: [MassHistPres] HC and HDC staffing levels
Good morning,
The Town of Concord is hoping to get a sense of your community's level of preservation staffing. We are especially interested in hearing from communities with both a Historical Commission and a Historic Districts Commission. How many full time or part time preservation staff members work with the commissions? How many historic districts are in your community and how many HC and HDC meetings occur each month?
Thanks so much for your feedback!
Sincerely,
Ann
