No. nein, nay, non, nyet.

You need a real roofer with appropriate references who knows what slate roofing is about. If there is an issue with leaks between the exposed slates, they could be repaired with bibs- copper flashing under joint of the exposed slates that extends up and slips over the top edge of the undercourse slate. If there are issues in a number of places, though, it could mean that a more extensive repair project is needed.

If you can find a copy of the Slate Book (Brian Stearns et al, 1998) it explains correct repair techniques in Chapter 11.

Subject: [MassHistPres] Historic slate roof repair - tar

Good evening, MassHistPres -

I am looking for information from those with expertise in historic slate roofs. We have an applicant who is proposing to "repair" portions of a slate roof with roof tar - directly applied to cracks in the slate. I have never seen this treatment advised from any standpoint. Please correct me if I am wrong. The NPS guidance is not particularly helpful.

Many thanks in advance.
