I would guess that the original material would have been roll roofing, and that is still available. It is not as durable as other types of roofing, and today it is largely used for sheds and outbuildings. GAF offers a two layer system that may be a bit more durable than a single layer over felt paper. It is relatively inexpensive, but you would have to talk to a roofer to get comparative pricing. What is the pitch of the roof?

Subject: [MassHistPres] Ranch House Roofing Options
Hello All-
Does anyone have experience with successful and visually/historically appropriate alternatives, other than rubber membrane, to original tar-and-gravel covering on low slope roofs such as on a 1950s ranch house? Asphalt tab shingles are not preferred for visual, code, and functionality reasons. If so, information on relative costs would be helpful also.
Thank you!
