what a wonderful story elizabeth, thanks for sharing...

I worked in kendall square in the 80’s and would often take walks along the charles
and admire the two tugboats that were there...does anyone know what happened to
the other? I recall they were both in tough shape...

best....jade

A fun story about the rescue of Tugboat Luna. I used to live on Beacon Hill and would often pass Luna, which was then half sunk in the Charles River down by the Science Museum. In 1993 I met my boyfriend, Doug Randall, (now husband) and he became involved with Patrick Otton and others in the salvage of the Luna. I worked at Harvard at the time as a Project Manager, mostly on historic buildings. I managed to convince the roofing manufacturer Sarnafill to donate materials and had a local roofing company clad the hull with Sarnafill while it was in drydock in East Boston. (They did it all for free, Harvard was a very good client for them!) They then floated the boat and the first night it was afloat my husband spent the night on board with all kinds of pumps. No one was sure whether the roofing material was going to work or not! This was at a time when we didn't have cell phones so you can imagine I didn't get much sleep that night, not knowing what was going to happen! Ah, the things we do to save history!

I would encourage people to help out with Tugboat Luna. She is a real beauty and has a lot of "firsts" to her name.

I am heading up nonprofit Luna Preservation Society (LPS) who has the care and custody of tugboat Luna, National Register of Historic Places – 1983, Boston Landmark – 1985, National Historic Landmark – 1989. With an amazing opportunity to dock Luna on Pier 3, Charles Town Navy Yard, adjacent to USS Constitution. This will take a talented group of individuals to continue the effort to bring Luna into the public presence and to continue the preservation of tugboat Luna.
