There are ways it might have been saved. If there is a will, there is always a way. If there’s a “won’t” then there is not.
DCR has had a program that finds people willing to repair, for their own occupancy, buildings that would remain in DCR’s possession. The town of Brookline owns a house in Larz Anderson Park (curiously it is in Boston), that had been neglected for years while being occupied by town employees. A Brookline resident agreed to restore the house (perhaps it helped that her son had experience recycling houses) in exchange for life tenure for herself. It worked out well.
