Donald:
If you remove the dome light, would there be danger of falling down
stairs or tripping because it's too dark going in or out? If so,
beware of a broken ankle (and a law suit), and put up something like a
black iron lantern with glass sides (even tho they weren't used in
1723). Or perhaps you might want to spot light the house, which always
looks nice, and keeps hardware off the house. I bet there's a
historical commissioner in your town who could advise you well.
