[MassHistPres] historic homes plaques

The Foxborough Historical Commission sponsors an Historic House Plaque
Program for its residents. An order form is available to any resident for
their home/structure and for $50.00 (the cost of the plaque itself) we
research gratis or confirm their research on the property and place the
order with the sign painter, Ould Colony Artisans of Farmington, Maine.
It is a wood plaque made out of maritime signboard intended for outside use
and it has several coats of oil-based paint protecting it. Our own plaque
is 8 years old now and still in perfect condition. A squirt of Windex twice
a year keeps the acid rain from dulling the appearance of the plaque and its
wording. The Commission has not discussed replacement strategies as yet.
For verbiage, our policy is to name the Built by/Built for/Home of, the
original owner, his/her occupation and the year of construction. We
currently have 114 plaques hanging in Foxborough and the program continues
to be a popular one with about 12 plaques per year researched and created,
on average.
We have no criteria for ordering a plaque because our goal is to encourage
an appreciation of older properties and their histories and to allow
passersby a glimpse into the history of a home, property or neighborhood.
Our plaques currently are dated 1752 to 1940.
I have attached a copy of our order form (it's not an "application" form)
which shows a likeness of our plaques. Bob Leonard at Ould Colony Artisans
(207-779-0707)paints this type and many others for several towns in
Massachusetts. He is extremely easy to work with and prompt with his
shipments.
If you have any other follow-up questions, let me know.

Suzanne,
The information I have collected on historic plaque programs is not
currently available on line. However, I will soon have it available as
a pdf - perhaps as early as next week.

Lenox also is looking into such a program.
We would like to know if other Commissions allow polyurethane for the
sake of longevity or must plaques be wood?
Chris Skelly--do you still have a booklet with information and
pictures? Is it available on line?
