Orleans Town Meeting has TWICE rejected a new police station, which was intended to replace an older 1950's building. The message to the citizens committee both times was - look into renovation/ addition. Seems that New England frugality is alive and well.

About 10 years ago Brookline combined a forgettable 1960's Police station (inspired by one of Lou Kahn's unmemorable early housing projects) and a mansarded ex-fire station into a new public safety building which definitely made a silk purse out of a sows ear as far as the police station was concerned. While it contains the Fire HQ. There are no trucks there.

In 1971 the former two-story Colonial Revival-style Peters High School Annex (1930) was retrofitted as the Southborough Police Station. The Town is now considering a proposal to build a new police facility, connected to the adjacent Fire Station using new construction. The current plan, if adopted, involves the demolition of the historic Annex building. The Southborough Historical Commission is interested in finding out whether other municipalities have renovated/rehabbed a historic building for adaptive reuse as an up-to-date police facility, with or without an addition of new construction. The Commission is requesting a National Register eligibility opinion from MHC, based on the Southborough Historic Properties Survey (2000), National Register program.
