Dear Mr. Clark:
The Town of Pelham and the Pelham Historical Commission cooperate in the management and use of the Pelham Hill Church/Museum in our National Register Historic District. The building is town property. The grounds are managed by the town DPW. The exterior of the building and basic structural issues are handled by the Town Historical Commission with most funding coming from the town or town-secured grants, where possible. Town Meeting has voted to allow the Society to use the building as their Museum and all expenses related to the dsiplays, docents, etc. are handled by the Society. In important instances the Society has generously provided matching funds for a Commission secured state emergency grant and for supplemental funds to enhance repairs to the steeple. The Commission accepts private donations to a town trust fund for repair and maintenance of the two buildings in the District. We use these from time to time on the Church/Museum. It is a very cooperative relationship.
Joseph S. Larson, Chair
Pelham Historical Commission.

Subject: [MassHistPres] Maintaining Municipalized Property
Has anyone had any experience with a local historical society maintaining a municipalized property? In Wilbraham we have had this situation for 34 years. I am wondering how other communities have handled this. Have there been any problems or concerns that have arisen? Also how are the expenses managed?
Wally Clark
