NEWS FROM PRESERVE UMASS

 

The Massachusetts Farm Bureau Federation has become a major financial
supporter for a project to create a new Agricultural Learning Center just
north of the UMass campus. This project will ensure that the 1894 Queen Anne
Style Horse Barn (AMH.109 on the Inventory of Historic and Archaeological
Assets of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts) will be saved from demolition.

Members of the Preserve UMass Steering Committee recently met with Dr.
Stephen Herbert, who directs UMass Extension, the Agricultural Experiment
Station and the Center for Agriculture who briefed us on the proposal for
the Learning Center. We have agreed to support this effort because it has
become clear that the campus administration will not preserve the barn at
its current location and this project will keep this structure serving an
academic agricultural purpose. The barn was constructed as a "model barn" at
Massachusetts Agricultural College. It served the program that created the
nationally known "Bay State" line of Morgan horses and, despite its current
shabby exterior appearance, retains important architectural details. An
independent engineer has informed PUMA that it is possible to move the
entire structure to a new location without dismantling it.

 

We urge you, if you are able, to make a contribution, of any amount, to this
project using the pledge card on page 5 of the Federation's Newsletter and
to send a letter of support and encouragement as well to the address on the
pledge card. If you cannot make a financial contribution, a letter of
support will be important in helping attract more corporate financial
donors.
