i would say that using vinyl or azek composite material and the like would be disrespectful to an historic landmark...

  Try using vinyl lettering on PVC or a plastic composite similar to what is being increasingly used on house trim such as Azek pvc.  We offer both MDO laminate wood as well as pvc.

    In Medfield we have about 10 outdoor
    memorial plaques in town squares, honoring local residents who have been killed in
    wars. Unfortunately, in less than ten years the plaques have corroded, and we
    replace them, we want something much more durable. 

    The present plaques ? 8-1/2 x 11? -
    are made of metal (aluminum? steel?) and have text painted(?) on them, and they?re
    protected [sic] with plexiglass(?) covers that have mainly served to trap moisture
    inside.

    There must be a better way.? Ideas? ?If possible, we?d like to keep cost below $500
    per plaque ? I?m almost afraid to ask the cost of brass with embossed lettering,
    though I imagine that would last a long time. Also, any recommended vendors?

    David,
    The Princeton Historical Commission has used Healy Bros in Rhode Island. Some of the plaques, made of bronze with raised lettering, we purchased in 1997 and they  have held up very well. The company is located in Lincoln, RI. and the telephone number is: 401 765 7600. We found them very helpful and easy to work with. Price wise, I am not sure how costly plaques are today but in 1997 we paid about $650. for an 18x24 marker.
