I asked Historic New England's Historic Homeowner program a similar question and was told to try cleaning with a mild solution of Murphy's oil soap for the dryness.

Hello Listers,
We have a member who has 18th century wood paneled walls that appear to be
drying as a result of heating the house. Is there a recommended treatment to
arrest the process, and perhaps recapture some of the luster of the wood?
Thanks for your advice and input.
