[MassHistPres] Ideas for a Demolition Delay Workshop

It is important to have knowledgeable professionals associated with Historical Commissions. The ONLY historic house we saved in Orleans was one where a "hired gun" engineer deemed the structure - which had experienced a flood from burst water pipes - unsound; the Commission members walked through it and suspected the deceptive nature of the report. I, as an architect involved with preservation requested that we dismiss the report as unfounded, and the owner then withdrew his request for demolition.
What I did could have been done by an experienced consultant. Whichever it is, the availability of informed input is key.
James Hadley, AIA
Ex-Chair, Orleans Historical Commission

> Historic boards on Cape Cod have often asked for advice on how to evaluate the case before them (ie. whether to apply the demolition delay or not), how to involve a structural engineer to consider an applicant's claim about the building's condition, how to explore alternatives to demolition during the delay period, and also how to insure that buildings are documented if the delay period expires without finding an alternative to demolition.
