Last July, the Hingham Historical Commission moved the ”Old Fort House” ca. 1680 from its original site to the grounds of the Historical Society’s “Old Ordinary” museum, approximately a mile away. Having been saved from the wrecking ball, the house will be restored and used as an exhibit of 17th century building techniques and materials.
The most direct route for the move was along two densely populated main Town roads. Comcast and Verizon are required disconnect and reconnect cables if needed to facilitate a move of this sort without charge, whether on a town road or state highway. I believe the same is true for a private way. Cables crews worked prior to, during and after the move.
The Hingham Light Plant and the Fire Department donated the manpower needed to manage their cables, wires and emergency communications. The DPW donated a crew to cut or secure low-hanging branches that came in contact with the structure along the route, and the Police Department donated its services for traffic control. Fortunately, there are a number of local contractors who are committed to preserving the Town’s historic assets. They donated time and manpower to prepare the house for the move and to stabilize it after the move. The only costs incurred by the Historical Commission were for the labor, equipment and the trailer to remove the house from its foundation, take it to the new site and set it on a temporary foundation – approximately $10,000.

Subject: [MassHistPres] Cost of Moving Overhead Utilities
I am wondering if anyone has any recent experiences with who is responsible for the cost of moving overhead utilities when a house is moved. Additionally, does this change if the utilities are located on a private street versus a town accepted road or state highway?
Thanks very much-
Sarah
