Space is still available for The Primer on Dendrochronology<http://shop.historicnewengland.org/showproduct.aspx?ProductID=8012&SEName=ask-the-experts-a-primer-on-dendrochronology>, a day-long introduction to this subject with on-site access to two historic properties whose dates of construction have been identified using evidence from their timber framing. Participants will visit Historic New England's Spencer-Pierce-Little manor house and adjacent Stekionis Tenant House with this region's most knowledgeable practitioners and researchers. A follow-on visit to the nearby Swett-Ilsley House, not yet dendro-dated, will give insight on whether it is suitable for similar testing.
Owners of early timber-framed structures, those responsible for the upkeep of such structures, and students of building conservation will gain valuable insight into the nature of this testing method and how it can be used to better understand the construction history and preservation needs of some of our earliest buildings. Lunch is included.
Saturday, April 18, 9:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Dendrochronology, or the practice of scientifically dating timber structures, intrigues many owners of old houses. At this weekend workshop, get an introduction to this fascinating area of building conservation. Learn what dendro is, how it works, what it can and can't tell us, and how dendro dating impacts preservation decisions in historic houses. Experts William Flynt of Historic Deerfield, architectural historian Anne Grady, and Newport Restoration Foundation Executive Director Pieter Roos discuss the use of dendrochronology, what it has revealed about New England architecture, current research, and how you can access testing. Afternoon tours of the manor house at Spencer-Peirce-Little Farm and nearby Swett-Ilsley House give a first-hand look at tested sites.
Box lunch is included. Registration is required. Historic Deerfield members must call to register. Please call 617-994-6644 for more information.
