Arlington HDC regulates fences forward of the front of the structure (corner
lot having 2 fronts). Generally we want fences to be period appropriate for
the house, fairly low, and open. See our guidelines on Town of Arlington
website.

Brookline separately reviews walls and fences. The guidelines address type,
height, materials, and % openness by location. It helps that fences are
subject to a building permit, which automatically tags them for review. If
one is built without a permit, that provides a potential additional hook for
enforcement. Fence contractors who may not regularly work here often are
unaware of the requirement for a permit, but owners generally know they are
reviewable. There have not been too many difficult violations - but fences
can occasionally raise neighborly passions.

I am doing some research into whether any communities with Local Historic
Districts regulate fencing.
If your community's LHD considers fencing in any way other than a category
of project to which review does not extend/is exempt, what language and
definitions are used?
Thanks very much-
