Hello
The Town of Weston recently (2016?) approved at Town Meeting an extension of our demo delay bylaw from 6 months to 12. There was almost no opposition to the move. We documented the very low percentage of building permits that a) are subject to Hist Comm purview b) come to the board for review c) result in public hearings and d) resulted in 6 month delays. The numbers were very persuasive, that the board uses the DD only as a tool of last resort. We also illustrated the presentation with photos of important buildings lost and under threat. It was also helpful to show the numbers of towns in the state with 12 , 18 or 24 month delays. Good luck. Alicia Primer, Weston HC

Salem would also be interested in responses from other communities about their experiences revising and expanding their demolition delay regulations. The City currently has a six month demolition delay period.
Thank you,
Patti

Subject: [MassHistPres] Demolition Delay Ordinance
Hello -
As a member of the Holyoke Historical Commission, I am writing to ask for assistance. We are beginning the process of revising our demolition delay ordinance, since our current ordinance only allows us to impose a six month delay on demolition. We would like to develop an ordinance that has a longer delay, some guidelines in place to try to limit/control demolition by neglect, and guidelines to ensure that owners are obligated to work with us or with appropriate municipal departments to save historically significant structures. I am assuming that some of you have more comprehensive ordinances in place and we would much appreciate any guidance, suggestions and/or samples of ordinances you could share to assist us as we undertake this task.
Thank you.
Frances Welson
