Your request prompts me to propose a topic to the list as well as to you.
There is a villain that hardly ever gets mentioned — one far more destructive than replacement windows or vinal siding. I’m seeing it all the time in Brookline’s districts and elsewhere. It is the total, down to the studs, gutting of historic houses — the This Old House effect.
Sometimes it’s new owners, sometimes developers. We hardly discuss it because there seems almost nothing to be done, even in LHDs.
At this rate, in 20 years there may not be a single surviving intact significant interior in my LHD of several hundred houses.
It’s becoming a Potemkin Village LHD, two or three houses at a time, year after year.
Perhaps this malignancy or blight (Now there’s an ironic term for this McMansionization.) should also be considered for next year's most endangered list.

This biennial statewide conference is an important opportunity to bring together those involved with preservation, community, advocacy, and history to learn, share, mentor, and network.
