We are facing a related situation in East Boston where a pending Landmark
was unexpectedly demolished last week. Unfortunately, there are no legal
protections for pending Landmarks in Boston. Outside of legal consequences,
public shaming can be a powerful tool -- we are hoping community members
will oppose future development proposals from this developer. Similarly,
I'd suggest widely publicizing the illegal demolition in Newton.
In addition to proposals to force the developer to replace the demolished
house, I would also suggest looking into the possibility of additional
consequences, including barring the developer from receiving a permit for
*any *construction project in Newton for a defined period of time, perhaps
two years.
