Jade,

I think I understand your aversion, but you shouldn’t be disappointed with other people who are curious and interested in the dramatic events of history. Their curiosity or their even interest in seeing a spectacle does not mean that these people are war mongers, or blood thirsty.

As a person who does civilian and military portrayals (I’ll be pressing cider in 18th century garb at an event tomorrow), the civilian subjects are difficult to portray because there is less documentation of the affairs of people enjoying peacetime. The large scale of wars and the drama led to documentation in fine detail so that we can see and understand what was happening. This detail also gives us hints about the period that we might not otherwise have.

I often get visits from combat veterans and one WWII veteran let me know that he appreciated our portrayal of them. I am sure that this not universal, but it tells me that many of those who lived these events don’t object to the portrayal of these events either.

Steve
